Badrinath sits in the Garhwal Himalayas at over three thousand metres, dedicated to Vishnu in his meditating form. It is one of the Char Dham of the larger pilgrimage circuit and one of the holiest Vaishnava sites in the north. Snowbound for half the year, the temple opens each spring in a ceremony that marks the start of the Himalayan pilgrim season.
Established as a major shrine by the philosopher Adi Shankaracharya in the 8th century; the structure has been restored many times since.
