The Sun Temple at Konark was designed as the chariot of Surya, the sun god, complete with twenty-four carved wheels and teams of straining stone horses. Though the main tower has fallen, the surviving structure remains a masterpiece of Kalinga architecture and sculpture. Its wheels are said to function as sundials, marking the passage of the day.
Built in the 13th century by King Narasimhadeva I of the Eastern Ganga dynasty; now a UNESCO World Heritage Site.
