The Meenakshi Amman temple honours the goddess Meenakshi and her consort Sundareswar, a form of Shiva, at the heart of the ancient city of Madurai. Its concentric corridors, thousand-pillared hall and fourteen soaring gopurams make it one of the great architectural achievements of South India. The temple's daily and seasonal rituals weave the divine marriage of the goddess into the life of the city.
Rooted in ancient Madurai, the present sprawling complex took shape largely under the Nayak rulers in the 16th and 17th centuries.
