The Classical Nature of Rohini Nakshatra in Sacred Vedic Tradition

Rohini Nakshatra spans Taurus 10° to 23°20', the fourth of the twenty-seven Nakshatras, and occupies what is perhaps the most romantically celebrated position in all of Jyotish cosmology. The mythology is precise and luminous: Chandra, the Moon god, was married to all twenty-seven Nakshatras — the twenty-seven daughters of Daksha — and was instructed to love each equally. But Chandra could not help himself. His attention, his presence, his very light was drawn irresistibly to Rohini above all others, and he spent most of his time in her celestial abode while the other wives pined. This myth is not incidental decoration; it is the essential key to understanding Rohini's nature. The Moon — Chandra — is the Dasha lord of Rohini, and the Moon chooses to rest in Rohini with special delight. The Devata is Brahma, the creator god of the Hindu trinity, whose Shakti is the very force of creation itself. Symbol is the chariot — specifically the slow, purposeful ox-cart, suggesting not dramatic leap but gradual, fertile ascent. The Gana is Manushya, the fully human Gana of rich embodied experience. The Shakti of Rohini is Rohana Shakti — the power of growth, the capacity to cause things to ascend, to rise, to increase. This is the Nakshatra where seeds become forests, where inspiration becomes art, where potential becomes manifest form of extraordinary beauty. Rohini's domain is fertile creation in its most pleasurable and aesthetically rich expression.
