The Classical Nature of Shravana Nakshatra in Vedic Tradition

Shravana Nakshatra spans Capricorn 10 to 23 degrees 20 minutes and is governed by Chandra as its Dasha lord. Its Devata is Vishnu, the great Preserver of cosmic order, whose Shakti is Samhanana Shakti — the power to connect and integrate seemingly disparate worlds into a unified understanding. The symbol is the ear, or alternatively three footprints, referencing the Trivikrama myth in which Vishnu measured all three worlds in three strides, demonstrating the ability to traverse every domain of existence without resistance. The Gana of Shravana is Deva — divine in temperament, governed by lightness, dharmic aspiration, and inherent trust in cosmic intelligence. The name derives from the Sanskrit root shru, meaning to hear. This is not passive hearing but a sacred, receptive attention that allows the listener to absorb the complete essence of what is spoken. Where other Nakshatras receive knowledge through action or vision, Shravana receives through perfect stillness. Vishnu's preserving quality combined with Chandra's lunar receptivity creates an archetype that holds nothing back, resists nothing, and therefore absorbs everything. The three footprints also speak to a triadic intelligence — the capacity to comprehend the physical, the astral, and the causal simultaneously without confusion. Shravana natives embody the Karma of attentiveness made incarnate.
