The Divine Significance and Mythological Roots of Kartik Maas
Kartik Maas (also spelled Kartick or Kartika) corresponds to October-November in the Gregorian calendar and is revered as the most spiritually potent month in Hindu tradition. According to the Bhagavata Purana and Narada Purana, Kartik is the month when Lord Krishna enacted His divine pastimes on Earth, particularly his appearance and His role in cosmic events. The Skanda Purana declares that observances performed during Kartik yield infinite merit — a single lamp lit during this month burns away an ocean of karmic debt. Kartik is named after the Nakshatra (star constellation) Kartik (Pleiades), whose dominion over this month creates a gateway to higher consciousness. The month honors Lord Hari (Vishnu) in all his forms, but especially as Krishna, the divine lover and embodiment of bhakti (devotional love). In the Padma Purana, it states that even involuntary or negligent actions performed during Kartik yield spiritual benefit, making this month extraordinarily compassionate and forgiving for sincere seekers.
