Rahu as the Karaka of Illusion, Obsession, and the Unconventional

Rahu (the North Node of the Moon) is the karaka of illusion, obsession, foreign lands, unconventional experiences, and karmic desire in Vedic astrology. Rahu is a shadowy planet, neither inherently malefic nor benefic, but rather a force of intensity and fixation. When Rahu occupies the 7th house, it transforms marriage from a conventional social contract into an unusual, often passionate, sometimes tumultuous affair. The Jataka Parijata and classical texts warn that Rahu in the 7th can create obsessive attachment, attraction across social boundaries, and marriages that defy conventional expectations. However, Rahu is also the karaka of evolutionary desire; it points to what the soul craves in this lifetime, even if that craving is irrational or unconventional. Rahu in the 7th indicates that the native's soul, in this lifetime, is meant to experience a marriage that transcends normal societal boundaries, that challenges their preconceptions, and that forces them to grow beyond their comfort zone. The spouse is not someone the native would have chosen based on rational criteria; instead, Rahu creates a compulsive, obsessive attraction that overrides logic and social convention. This can be a blessing if the native is open to growth and willing to challenge inherited prejudices, or a curse if the native is rigidly bound by social expectations. Rahu in the 7th is the placement of elopement, of marrying across caste or religion despite family opposition, of choosing a partner from a different country, or of entering into a marriage that scandals the family. The marriage itself is often intense, filled with passion, jealousy, possessiveness, and transformation. It is rarely boring.
