Why the Moon Governs Digestion and Nourishment
In Ayurveda, the digestive fire — Agni — is the central pillar of health. In Jyotish, the Moon (Chandra) governs not only the mind and emotions but also the stomach, the lymphatic system, and the process of nourishment from intake to absorption. The Moon's sign, phase, and house placement in your birth chart reveal the nature of your digestive Agni and the foods your body is constitutionally suited to receive. Beyond the physical, the Moon governs the emotional relationship with food — the cravings, the comfort-eating patterns, and the subtle nutritive needs of the psyche. Eating in alignment with your Moon sign means honoring both the physical digestive pattern and the emotional nourishment template encoded at birth. The Moon's phase also matters: digestion is generally stronger during Shukla Paksha (waxing Moon) and more delicate during Krishna Paksha (waning Moon), making the fortnight cycle a practical rhythm for adjusting dietary heaviness and lightness.
Fire Moon Signs — Mesha, Simha, Dhanu
Those with the Moon in Mesha (Aries), Simha (Leo), or Dhanu (Sagittarius) have what Ayurveda would call a sharp, high Agni (Tikshna Agni) with a strong Pitta overlay. These individuals digest food quickly, have good appetite, and can tolerate a wide range of foods, but are prone to acidity, liver inflammation, and gastric ulcers when they eat too spicy, too sour, or too oily. The recommended approach for fire Moon signs is to prioritize cooling, slightly sweet, and bitter foods: coconut water, pomegranate, fennel, coriander, cucumber, bitter gourd, and cooling grains like barley and basmati rice. Avoid excess chili, garlic in raw form, fermented foods, and alcohol. The ideal meal timing for fire Moon signs is to eat the largest meal at midday when the solar fire is also at its peak, supporting digestion naturally. Ghee is particularly beneficial for these Moon signs as it cools and lubricates the sharp fire without extinguishing it, protecting the digestive membranes from excess Pitta erosion.
