The Classical Nature of Uttara Phalguni Nakshatra and Aryaman Devata

Uttara Phalguni Nakshatra spans Leo 26°40' to Virgo 10° — one of the zodiac's most significant transitional positions, straddling the boundary between the solar authority of Leo and the discriminating service of Virgo. This Rashi crossing is not incidental but essential to Uttara Phalguni's character: it is the Nakshatra that carries the creative pleasure of Leo into responsible expression in Virgo's domain of duty and discernment. Its Devata is Aryaman, one of the twelve Adityas, the solar deity who governs contracts, formal agreements, marriage vows, and the social norms and customs that maintain the fabric of civilized life. The symbol is the back legs of a bed — paired with Purva Phalguni's front legs, this completes the marriage bed, though where Purva Phalguni governs the pleasure of that bed, Uttara Phalguni governs its covenant. The fig tree or banyan tree is also a classical symbol — the tree under which commitments are witnessed, the sheltering canopy of social agreement. The Gana is Manushya. The Dasha lord is the Sun, bringing solar dignity, authority, and the quality of genuine self-knowing. The Shakti of Uttara Phalguni is Chayani Shakti — the power of accumulation over time, the gathering together of resources, relationships, and social bonds through sustained commitment. Aryaman's domain is precise: he is invoked specifically in marriage ceremonies in Vedic tradition, and his Nakshatra carries the Dharma of fidelity, formal commitment, and the sacred weight of one's word given to another in witness.
