Grahan Dosha: Definition, Classical Sources, and Effects

Grahan Dosha (eclipse defect) occurs in the natal chart when the Sun (Surya) or Moon (Chandra) is conjunct either Rahu or Ketu within a significant orb (typically within 10 degrees for the Sun and 15 degrees for the Moon, though some authorities use tighter orbs of 5 degrees). The term Grahan (eclipse) directly maps the astrological configuration onto the astronomical reality of solar and lunar eclipses, which occur precisely when the Sun or Moon aligns with the nodal axis. Brihat Parashara Hora Shastra (Chapter on Navagrahas) discusses Rahu and Ketu as shadow planets (Chaya Grahas) that specifically afflict the luminaries. When Surya Grahan Dosha (Sun conjunct Rahu or Ketu) is present, effects typically include: health issues related to the father, ego identity crises, career obstacles, government and authority conflicts, and reduced vitality. When Chandra Grahan Dosha (Moon conjunct Rahu or Ketu) is present, effects include: mental anxiety and psychological disturbances, issues with the mother, sleep disorders, emotional instability, digestive problems, and difficulty in establishing domestic peace. The severity depends on which node is involved (Rahu creates worldly obsession; Ketu creates inner confusion), the house position, and whether benefics aspect the conjunction to provide relief.
