ग्रहणयोग: सूर्य आणि चंद्राच्या ग्रहणसंयोगांचे जन्मकुंडलीवरील परिणाम

Classical Definition: What Creates Grahan Yoga in the Janma Kundali

Grahan Yoga — from the Sanskrit 'Grahan' (eclipse, to seize, to swallow) — refers to the natal chart configuration where either Surya (Sun) is conjunct Rahu, or Chandra (Moon) is conjunct Ketu, within a tight orb that mirrors an astronomical eclipse. The name reflects the Puranic cosmology of Svarbhanu, the asura whose severed head (Rahu) and tail (Ketu) periodically swallow the luminaries during astronomical eclipses. In the Janma Kundali, these conjunctions recreate the eclipse moment in natal form, imprinting the consciousness of the native with the eclipse's characteristic qualities — Rahu's insatiable desire and worldly amplification afflicting Surya's clarity and authority (Surya Grahan Yoga), or Ketu's renunciation and dissolution weakening Chandra's emotional nourishment and mental stability (Chandra Grahan Yoga). The classical orb for eclipse conjunction in natal Jyotish follows the BPHS standard of 10 degrees — if Surya and Rahu are within 10 degrees of each other in the same sign or in closely adjacent longitudes, Grahan Yoga is formed. Brihat Parashara Hora Shastra and Saravali by Kalyana Varma both discuss the severe affliction of luminaries through malefic conjunction; Saravali Chapter 26 (Santhanam ed.) specifically addresses what malefics in conjunction with Surya produce for the Pitru, authority, and vitality karakatvas. The Hora Sara (Prithuyasa, Santhanam ed.) Chapter 9 discusses node-luminary conjunctions as eclipse configurations in natal charts.
