The Classical Nature of Punarvasu Nakshatra in Vedic Sacred Texts
Punarvasu Nakshatra spans Gemini 20° to Cancer 3°20', the seventh of the twenty-seven Nakshatras, and carries in its very name the seed of its essential teaching. Puna means again; Vasu means good, the good ones, goodness itself — the Vasus are the eight luminous cosmic beings associated with abundance, the natural world, and the benefic forces of manifest existence. Punarvasu, then, is the return of goodness, the nakshatra of the second chance, the cosmic principle that what is genuinely good does not die permanently — it returns. The Devata is Aditi, among the most ancient and cosmically significant of the Deva-realm's feminine principles. Aditi is the mother of all the Adityas, mother of the gods themselves, the infinite expanse of cosmic space that contains and sustains all existence without condition and without limit. Her quality is unconditional, infinite, all-accepting, endlessly renewing mothering — not the particular love of one parent for one child, but the impersonal, vast Shakti that loves all existence simply because existence is. The Dasha lord is Jupiter, Guru — the great benefic, the teacher of the Devas, the principle of wisdom, grace, expansion, and the inherent benevolence of cosmic order. The symbol is the quiver of arrows — not a single arrow aimed at one target, but a container of multiple possibilities, readiness for diverse directions. The Gana is Deva. The Shakti of Punarvasu is Vasutva Prapana Shakti — the power to gain wealth and substance through renewal, the capacity to regenerate and return to opulence after loss.
