Mars Mahadasha: Mangal's 7-Year Fire and Its Classical Foundation

Mangal (Mars) Mahadasha spans exactly 7 years and governs the most energetically concentrated period in the Vimsottari Dasha sequence. Classical Jyotisha texts including Brihat Parashara Hora Shastra and Phaladeepika describe Mars Mahadasha as a period of intense vitality, willpower, ambition, and competitive action — qualities that, when well-directed, generate significant professional achievement, physical conquest, and courageous innovation. Mars rules Aries and Scorpio, exalts in Capricorn, and debilitates in Cancer. Natal Mars in Capricorn (Ruchaka Yoga, one of the Panchamahapurusha Yogas) creates a 7-year Mahadasha of extraordinary professional drive and physical endurance. Mars in Cancer (debilitation) or in the 4th, 7th, or 12th Bhava without mitigating factors introduces the shadow Mars: accidents, violence (received or expressed), legal disputes, surgeries, and conflicts with siblings, partners, and competitors. The Lagna determines Mars's functional nature: for Aries and Scorpio Lagna natives (Mars as Lagna lord), this Mahadasha is an intensely self-defining period. For Cancer and Libra Lagna natives, Mars rules Dusthana Bhavas — the 6th and 8th or the 2nd and 7th — introducing the period's energies through friction, opposition, and strategic conflict. Mangal Dosha (Mars in the 1st, 4th, 7th, 8th, or 12th Bhava) intensifies marital tension specifically during Mars-Mars and Mars-Moon Bhuktis.
