Ketu as the Karaka of Spirituality, Release, and Past-Life Karma

Ketu (the South Node of the Moon) is the karaka of spirituality, liberation, detachment, past-life karma, and the dissolution of material attachments in Vedic astrology. Ketu is a shadowy planet, representing what the soul has already mastered and is now releasing, or what the soul carries from past lives. When Ketu occupies the 7th house, it transforms marriage from a purely material or emotional affair into a deeply spiritual and karmic encounter. The Jataka Parijata teaches that Ketu in the 7th house indicates a marriage with profound spiritual purpose, often involving a partner with whom the native has deep karmic connections from past lives. The native may have been married to this partner in a previous incarnation, or they may be twin flames meant to spiritually elevate each other in this lifetime. However, Ketu also brings detachment and a certain indifference to the worldly aspects of marriage—property, children, social status, and even romantic passion. This can make marriage either transcendent or empty, depending on how the couple navigates the energy. Ketu in the 7th is the placement of those who marry for spiritual reasons, who choose partners who support their spiritual path, or who transcend the ordinary bonds of marriage to create a union aligned with higher consciousness. It is also the placement of those who struggle with marriage because their soul is naturally inclined toward solitude, renunciation, and spiritual pursuits rather than domestic life. The challenge with Ketu in the 7th is to find a middle way: to honor the marriage as a spiritual practice while not neglecting the practical and emotional needs of the partnership.
