मुंडन मुहूर्त · Baby's first haircut — Chudakarana Samskara
Mundan (also called Chudakarana or Mundana) is the Vedic ceremony of a child's first haircut, one of the 16 Samskaras. The ritual is performed between the child's 1st and 3rd year of life. The head-shaving removes the hair the child was born with, which is believed to carry any negative karmic imprints from previous lives. A fresh start is given to the child for health, intellect, and longevity.

Frequently Asked Questions
What is Mundan ceremony and why is it done?
Mundan (Chudakarana) is a Vedic ceremony where a baby's head is shaved for the first time, typically between 1 and 3 years of age. It is performed to remove karmic impressions from previous lives that the birth hair carries, and to bless the child with health, intelligence, and longevity. It is one of the 16 Samskaras (sacred rites of passage) in Hindu tradition.
At what age should Mundan be done?
Mundan is traditionally performed in the child's 1st or 3rd year — ideally in an odd year. Many families do it when the child is between 6 months and 2 years. The date should be chosen based on a proper muhurta that considers the child's birth nakshatra, the current Panchang, and the family's Kula tradition.
Which nakshatra is best for Mundan?
Pushya nakshatra is considered the most auspicious for Mundan. Ashwini, Mrigashira, Hasta, Anuradha, Shravana, Uttara Phalguni, and Revati are also excellent choices. The ceremony should avoid Rahu Kaal and Yamaganda on the chosen day.
Can Mundan be done at home?
Yes, Mundan can be performed at home. Many families also perform it at sacred temples or pilgrimage sites (Tirupati Balaji being the most famous in South India, Kashi Vishwanath in North India). The location is less important than the muhurta (auspicious timing) and the presence of a qualified priest.
