The Sun Temple at Konark was designed as the chariot of Surya, the sun god, complete with twenty-four carved wheels and teams of straining stone horses. Though the main tower has fallen, the surviving structure remains a masterpiece of Kalinga architecture and sculpture. Its wheels are said to function as sundials, marking the passage of the day.
Built in the 13th century by King Narasimhadeva I of the Eastern Ganga dynasty; now a UNESCO World Heritage Site.
The shrine is dedicated to Surya Dev, and devotees come from across the country for darshan in the inner sanctum. What follows is the heart of what each pilgrim seeks here.
