Which Finger and Metal to Wear Ruby
Ruby (Manik) is ruled by Surya and must be worn on the Anamika (ring finger) of the right hand, as this finger is energetically connected to solar channels in Jyotish tradition. The ring finger corresponds to the Sun in classical hasta rekha (palmistry) and in Nadi texts. The ideal metal is gold — specifically 22-karat yellow gold — which amplifies Surya's warm, radiant, and pitta-activating energy. The gemstone must be set so that its base touches the skin, allowing direct energy transfer. A minimum weight of 3 to 5 Ratti (approximately 2.7 to 4.5 carats) is recommended for therapeutic effect; gemstones below this weight produce negligible results. Avoid silver, as it is ruled by Chandra and creates an energetic conflict with Surya's fire. Panchdhatu (five-metal alloy) is permissible as a secondary option but gold remains the first choice. Ensure the stone is natural, untreated, and free from inclusions — a certified Burmese or Mozambique ruby with strong red saturation is considered most potent in Jyotish practice.
Day, Time, Hora, and Nakshatra for Wearing Ruby
Ruby must be worn on a Sunday (Ravivara), the day presided over by Surya. The auspicious time window is the Surya Hora — the first hora of sunrise on Sunday, which is ruled by the Sun itself. The hora begins at local sunrise and lasts approximately 60 minutes; wearing the gem during this window ensures maximum solar resonance. For nakshatra timing, Krittika, Uttara Phalguni, and Uttara Ashadha are the three nakshatras ruled by Surya and are ideal; wearing Ruby when the Moon transits any of these constellations amplifies activation. Additionally, avoid wearing on Amavasya (new moon) or during a solar eclipse (Surya Grahan), as these periods represent Surya in weakness or affliction. The Shukla Paksha (waxing lunar fortnight) is always preferred over Krishna Paksha. A Shubha Muhurta computed by an experienced Jyotishi using the Panchang for your city provides the most precise timing, especially when is strong and free from malefic influence at the moment of wearing.
