The Classical Nature of Pushya Nakshatra in Vedic Tradition

Pushya Nakshatra spans Cancer 3°20' to 16°40' and holds a singular distinction in classical Jyotish: Brihat Samhita and Muhurta Chintamani name it the most auspicious Nakshatra in the entire lunar zodiac. Its Devata is Brihaspati — Jupiter in his role as divine teacher, Guru of the gods, sovereign of wisdom and dharmic knowledge. Its symbol is the cow's udder, the inexhaustible source of nourishment, and also the lotus — purity arising from fertile ground. The Gana is Deva, aligning Pushya with divine, harmonious, and sattvic qualities. Its Dasha lord is Saturn, which creates the foundational paradox of this Nakshatra: Shani's rigorous discipline channeled through Brihaspati's grace, blooming inside Cancer, the Moon's own sign. The specific Shakti Pushya bestows is Brahmavarchasa Shakti — the power of spiritual luminosity, the capacity to radiate divine energy into the world. Where other Nakshatras grant strength, longevity, or prosperity, Pushya grants the capacity to become a source of light for others. This triple combination — Saturn's structural integrity, Jupiter's wisdom, and the Moon's nurturing receptivity — produces the most complete benefic expression available anywhere in Nakshatra Dharma. Auspicious ceremonies, marriages, and beginnings are traditionally initiated when Chandra occupies Pushya.
