The Meeting of Two Ancient Sciences
Ayurveda and Jyotish were never meant to be practiced in isolation. Both emerge from the same Vedic root, and the ancient Rishis who codified the Charaka Samhita and Brihat Parashara Hora Shastra understood the human body as a microcosm of planetary forces. Ayurveda gives us the three doshas — Vata (air and space), Pitta (fire and water), and Kapha (earth and water) — as the fundamental intelligence governing all biological processes. Jyotish gives us the nine Grahas, twelve Rashis, and twenty-seven Nakshatras as the cosmic forces shaping our constitution at the moment of birth. When you overlay these two maps, the birth chart becomes the most precise Prakriti assessment tool available. No questionnaire can capture what a skilled reading of your Lagna, Lagna lord, and Moon sign can reveal about the doshic balance you were born with and the imbalances you are most vulnerable to across this lifetime.
Reading Vata from the Chart
Vata dosha — governed by air and space — is strongly associated with the planet Shani (Saturn) and the sign pair of Mithuna (Gemini) and Kanya (Virgo) in their communicative, nervous, and movement-related expressions, as well as the Vayu-tattva signs Mithuna, Tula, and Kumbha. If your Lagna falls in an air sign or is aspected heavily by Shani, and if Shani sits in a Kendra (1st, 4th, 7th, or 10th house), Vata is likely your primary dosha. The Nakshatras associated with Vata tendency include Ashwini, Swati, Shatabhisha, and Punarvasu. People with strong Rahu influence on the Lagna or Lagna lord also tend toward Vata aggravation, as Rahu mimics the airy, unpredictable quality of Vayu. Physically, these individuals often have light frames, dry skin, variable digestion, and a mind that moves quickly between ideas. They are prone to anxiety, insomnia, constipation, and joint issues when Vata goes out of balance.
Reading Pitta from the Chart
Pitta dosha is fire and water — transformative, intense, and precise. In the birth chart, Pitta signatures appear through the Sun (Surya), Mars (Mangal), and the fire signs Mesha (Aries), Simha (Leo), and Dhanu (Sagittarius). If your Lagna or Lagna lord falls in a fire sign, or if Surya and Mangal are strongly placed in Kendras or Trikonas without significant affliction, Pitta is likely dominant in your constitution. Nakshatras with strong Pitta associations include Krittika (ruled by Surya), Vishakha, Bharani, and Purva Phalguni. Physically, Pitta-dominant individuals tend to have medium builds, warm body temperature, sharp hunger, and penetrating intellects. They are natural leaders and perfectionists, but prone to inflammation, acid reflux, skin rashes, liver imbalances, and anger-related disorders when the fire burns too high. Timing of Pitta aggravation can be tracked astrologically by transits of Mangal or Surya through the natal Lagna.

Reading Kapha from the Chart
Kapha dosha — earth and water — brings stability, endurance, and nourishment. In Jyotish, Kapha is associated with the Moon (Chandra), Jupiter (Guru), and Venus (Shukra), as well as the earth signs Vrishabha (Taurus), Kanya (Virgo), and Makara (Capricorn), and the water signs Karka (Cancer), Vrishchika (Scorpio), and Meena (Pisces). If your Lagna is a water or earth sign and your Moon is well-placed and full (Shukla Paksha), Kapha is likely your primary dosha. Nakshatras with Kapha influence include Rohini, Pushya, Uttara Phalguni, and Revati. Kapha-dominant individuals are typically robust, slow-moving, emotionally steady, and deeply loyal. They gain weight easily, have excellent stamina but sluggish digestion, and are prone to mucus accumulation, congestion, weight gain, diabetes, and lethargy when Kapha increases. Guru transiting through water signs or aspecting the Moon can amplify Kapha in a given period.
Dual Doshas and the Rising Sign as Primary Key
Most people are dual-doshic by constitution — Vata-Pitta, Pitta-Kapha, or Vata-Kapha — and the birth chart reflects this beautifully. The Lagna (Ascendant) is the primary key for determining physical Prakriti because it governs the body's form and function. The Moon sign reflects emotional and mental constitution. The Lagna lord's strength, placement, and associations refine the picture further. For example, a Scorpio Lagna (a water sign suggesting Kapha-Pitta) with its lord Mars placed in Leo alongside the Sun amplifies the Pitta quality dramatically. Similarly, a Gemini Lagna with Mercury conjunct Saturn in an air sign tilts strongly toward Vata. To arrive at your accurate Prakriti from the chart, assess: the element of your Lagna sign, the element of your Moon sign, the planets aspecting or conjoining the Lagna, the Nakshatra of your Lagna degree, and the element and natural signification of your Lagna lord. Cross-reference these five layers and the dominant element that emerges is your primary dosha. A qualified Jyotishi and Ayurvedic practitioner working together can then design a constitution-specific healing plan rooted in this celestial blueprint.
