Why Planets Govern the Body
The Vedic understanding of the body is not limited to the physical. The Pancha Kosha model describes five layers of existence — from the gross physical Annamaya Kosha to the blissful Anandamaya Kosha — and the nine planets influence all five layers simultaneously. At the gross physical level, each Graha has been assigned governance over specific organs, tissues (Dhatus), and physiological systems through thousands of years of clinical observation recorded in texts such as the Ashtanga Hridayam and validated through the Nadi-reading tradition. These correspondences are not metaphorical. They describe how cosmic frequencies, arriving through planetary positions at birth and through ongoing transits, stimulate or suppress specific biological processes. When a planet is debilitated, combust, afflicted by malefics, or transiting through difficult houses in your natal chart, the body systems it governs become vulnerable. When a planet is exalted, well-aspected, or in its own sign, it confers vitality and resilience to its corresponding physiological domain.
Surya, Chandra, and Mangal — The Vital Triad
Surya (Sun) governs the heart, the bones (Asthi Dhatu), the eyes (specifically right eye in men, left in women), the spine, and the vital life force (Prana). A strong Surya in the natal chart gives excellent cardiac health, strong bones, good eyesight, and a powerful immune response. When Surya is afflicted or in transit through the 6th, 8th, or 12th house of the natal Moon, one may experience cardiac irregularities, bone density concerns, spinal issues, or lowered immunity. Chandra (Moon) governs the blood, the lymphatic system, the lungs, the breasts and reproductive fluids, the mind, and the left eye. An afflicted Moon — particularly during Krishna Paksha when it is waning and weak — correlates with fluid imbalances, hormonal fluctuations, emotional disturbances, and respiratory vulnerability. Mangal (Mars) rules the muscles, bone marrow (Majja Dhatu), red blood cells, the bile (Pitta), male reproductive tissue (Shukra Dhatu in the male body), and the adrenal glands. A strong Mars gives muscular vigor and sharp metabolism, while an afflicted Mars contributes to inflammation, bleeding disorders, fevers, and accidents.
Budha, Guru, and Shukra — The Subtle Governors
Budha (Mercury) governs the nervous system, the skin (Twak — the outermost tissue layer), the respiratory passages, the tongue and speech organs, and the intestinal absorption process. Budha's influence on Vata makes it a key planet to watch for all neurological and psychosomatic conditions. An afflicted Mercury contributes to nerve disorders, speech impediments, skin conditions, and digestive malabsorption. Guru (Jupiter) governs the liver, the gallbladder, the fat tissue (Meda Dhatu), the arterial system, the ears, and the overall growth and expansion processes of the body. Jupiter's benefic influence is essential for healthy liver function, proper fat metabolism, and the maintenance of Ojas — the subtle essence of all seven Dhatus that is the foundation of immunity. Shukra (Venus) governs the reproductive system (particularly female), the kidneys, the skin's luster, the semen and Shukra Dhatu, the eyes' moisture, and the overall vitality of bodily fluids. A strong Venus gives radiant health, reproductive vigor, and beautiful skin, while a compromised Venus contributes to kidney disorders, hormonal imbalance, and loss of Ojas.

Shani, Rahu, and Ketu — The Chronic and Karmic Layers
Shani (Saturn) governs the bones, the teeth, the joints, the colon and elimination system, the nervous system's myelin sheath, the spleen, and the skin in its structural (not luminous) aspect. Saturn's slow transit through a sign takes approximately two and a half years, and its prolonged influence on any house or planet governing a body system can create long-term, chronic conditions in that domain — arthritis, nerve degeneration, colon disorders, or dental problems. Saturn also governs the aging process itself. Rahu (North Node) has no physical body but creates deceptive or unusual manifestations in the body systems of the house it occupies or the planets it conjoins — often presenting as mysterious, misdiagnosed, or chronic conditions that conventional medicine struggles to identify. Rahu is associated with toxins, poisons, strange infections, and neurological misfiring. Ketu (South Node) governs the immune system at a deep karmic level and is associated with mysterious fevers, parasitic infections, wounds, and spiritual illness. Ketu's influence can either purify (like a surgical flame) or complicate, depending on its house placement and aspects.
Using Planetary Periods (Dashas) for Health Forecasting
One of the most powerful applications of this planetary-body map is in health forecasting through the Vimshottari Dasha system. Each planetary period activates the significations of that planet, including its bodily rulerships. A person entering a Mars Mahadasha (7-year period) should proactively support the muscular system, monitor inflammation, and be extra cautious around fire and bladed objects. During a Mercury Mahadasha, the nervous system and digestive absorption deserve attention. During a Saturn Mahadasha (19-year period), the joints, bones, and elimination channels need regular support through oil massage (Abhyanga), warm foods, and Vata-pacifying herbs like Ashwagandha and Bala. The Antardasha (sub-period) within the Mahadasha refines the timing further. When both the Mahadasha and Antardasha lords govern the same vulnerable body system, and when a difficult transit (like Saturn or Mars aspecting the 6th or 8th house) coincides, that window represents the highest vulnerability period for illness — and the most important time for proactive Ayurvedic intervention and Jyotish-guided ritual support.
