Anāhata · अनाहत · “Unstruck Sound / Unhurt”
The bridge between earthly and divine — love, compassion, grief, and the healing power of the heart.
Understanding the Heart Chakra
Anahata (Heart Chakra) is the fourth and central chakra — literally the bridge between the three lower chakras (earth energy) and the three upper chakras (spiritual energy). Its Sanskrit name means 'unstruck sound' — referring to a primordial sound that exists in the heart without being caused by any external percussion: the sound of pure being. The heart chakra governs love, compassion, grief, forgiveness, and the capacity for genuine connection. It is the seat of the higher emotions — not the reactive emotions of the sacral chakra, but the conscious, chosen love that remains even when feeling is difficult. The element is Air — the breath. The most direct access to the heart chakra is through conscious breathing: slow, deep breathing directly soothes the heart. The heart chakra is most directly opened through grief (fully feeling loss), forgiveness (releasing the contraction of resentment), and unconditional love. Many healing traditions consider the heart chakra the most important energy centre because it is where heaven (the three upper chakras) and earth (the three lower chakras) meet in the human body.

FAQs
What is the heart chakra (Anahata)?
The heart chakra (Anahata) is the fourth chakra, located at the centre of the chest. It is the bridge between the lower physical chakras and the upper spiritual chakras. It governs love, compassion, grief, and forgiveness. When open, it enables genuine love, deep connection, and the healing power of compassion. When blocked, it manifests as emotional walls, unprocessed grief, resentment, and loneliness. The Sanskrit name 'Anahata' means 'unstruck sound' — the primordial hum of pure being that resides in every heart.
How do I open a blocked heart chakra?
Heart chakra healing requires a willingness to feel — especially grief and vulnerability. Most effective practices: (1) Metta (loving-kindness) meditation — extend love to self first, then others. (2) Breathwork: slow, deep diaphragmatic breathing directly activates heart coherence. (3) Heart-opening yoga: Camel Pose, Cobra, Bridge. (4) Allowing grief — cry, journal, talk to a therapist about unprocessed losses. (5) Forgiveness practice — not condoning wrongs, but releasing the contraction they create in your heart. Rose Quartz is the most widely used gemstone for heart healing.
