Understanding the Crown Chakra
Sahasrara (Crown Chakra) is the seventh and highest chakra, located at the crown of the head. Its Sanskrit name means 'thousand-petalled lotus' — a flower of pure consciousness blooming upward into the infinite. While the root chakra connects us down into the earth, the crown chakra connects us up into cosmic consciousness, the divine, and the source of all existence. This is the chakra of enlightenment, spiritual realisation, and the direct experience of unity — the dissolution of the boundary between the individual self and the universal Self (Atman = Brahman in Vedanta). The crown chakra cannot be forced open through technique — it is the natural flowering that occurs when all lower chakras are sufficiently purified and aligned. Ketu (South Node) governs the crown chakra in Vedic wisdom: Ketu is the planet of moksha (liberation) and past-life spiritual mastery — its connection to the crown reflects the deep truth that liberation is not achieved but remembered. The crown chakra represents the highest aspiration of the entire chakra system and of Vedic astrology: freedom from the cycle of suffering and the direct realisation of one's nature as pure, undivided consciousness.

FAQs
What is the crown chakra (Sahasrara)?
The crown chakra (Sahasrara) is the seventh and highest chakra, located at the top of the head. It governs cosmic consciousness, spiritual realisation, and the connection to the divine. When open, it produces experiences of unity, deep meditation, and transcendence of the ordinary ego-self. When blocked, it manifests as existential emptiness, spiritual materialism, and disconnection from meaning. The Sanskrit name 'Sahasrara' means 'thousand-petalled lotus' — the full flowering of human consciousness in its highest expression.
How does the crown chakra relate to the other 6 chakras?
The crown chakra is the destination of the entire chakra system — it is where the energy that has been activated in all lower centres culminates in cosmic awareness. In Kundalini yoga, the activation of all 7 chakras in sequence allows the Kundalini Shakti (life-force energy, coiled at the root) to travel upward through each chakra and ultimately blossom in the Sahasrara as illumination. This is why all lower chakra work is ultimately preparation for the crown's opening — you cannot genuinely open the crown while the lower chakras remain severely blocked.
