Jyotish · The 27 lunar mansions
Beneath the twelve rāśi lie the nakshatras — twenty-seven lunar mansions the Moon moves through, each with its own deity, ruling planet and character. Your birth nakshatra reads finer than your sign: it shapes your dashas, your marriage match and your timing.
Every nakshatra
The deeper layer
Each nakshatra spans exactly 13°20′ of the zodiac, so the twelve signs each hold about two and a quarter of them. Where your sign paints in broad strokes, your nakshatra reads the fine grain — the deity that governs your instincts, the planet that times your life periods, and the kuta points that decide a marriage match.
Your nakshatra sets the Vimshottari timeline of life periods.
The Ashtakuta system reads nakshatra to nakshatra.
Auspicious timing is chosen by the day's nakshatra.
Deity, gana and yoni give a finer read than the sign.
Questions
A nakshatra is a lunar mansion — one of 27 equal 13°20′ divisions of the zodiac that the Moon travels through. Each has its own symbol, presiding deity and ruling planet, and your birth nakshatra (the one the Moon occupied when you were born) shapes personality, timing (dashas) and compatibility in Vedic astrology.
There are 27 nakshatras, from Ashwini (1) to Revati (27), spanning the full 360° of the zodiac. Some traditions add a 28th, Abhijit, but the classical Vimshottari system used here works with 27.
Your nakshatra is the one the Moon occupied at the exact moment and place of your birth. Cast your free kundli with your birth date, time and place and it is computed for you — you cannot reliably know it from your Sun sign alone.
Rashi is your Moon sign — one of 12 thirty-degree signs. A nakshatra is finer: one of 27 lunar mansions, so each rashi contains roughly 2¼ nakshatras. Nakshatra gives a more precise read of character and timing than the rashi alone.
Nakshatras drive the Vimshottari dasha (the timeline of life periods), marriage matching (the Ashtakuta/kuta system), and electional timing (muhurta). They add a layer of detail that sign-based astrology cannot reach.
