Ashtakavarga counts the bindus, points of support, that each sign receives from eight sources: the seven grahas and the lagna. Added together, the Sarvashtakavarga always totals 337, about 28 a sign. A sign with 28 or more is firm ground for its house and for the grahas that transit it.

All twelve signs in the south Indian square, each with its bindus, then every sign as a bar against the average. This is a recorded sample chart, shown as an example.
Ashtakavarga, the eightfold division, is Parashara's way of weighing each sign. For each graha, BPHS lists the houses, counted from the seven grahas and the lagna, that receive a bindu. One graha's count is its Bhinnashtakavarga; the seven together make the Sarvashtakavarga.
The 337 bindus come to about 28 a sign. A sign with 28 or more is a field of support: its house gives steadily, and a graha passing through it tends to give its better results. Below 25, the house asks for patience and care.
Astrologers read Ashtakavarga to time transits, above all of Saturn and Jupiter, to judge a house beyond the strength of its lord, and to find the kinder months of a year. In a full reading, the reductions called shodhana refine the count further.
Date, time and place fix the lagna and the seven grahas, with Lahiri ayanamsa.
From each graha and the lagna, BPHS names the houses that receive a bindu.
The bindus are added sign by sign: up to 8 from each graha's table, 56 at most.
The 337 bindus average 28 a sign, so each sign is shown above or below that line.
About bindus, the Sarvashtakavarga and your birth details.
It is the sum of the seven grahas' Bhinnashtakavargas. In each, the seven grahas and the lagna can give a sign one bindu apiece, so a sign holds between 0 and 56 bindus, and the twelve signs together always add up to 337.
28 is the average. A sign with 28 or more is counted strong for its house, and 30 or more is very supportive. Below 25, the house asks for more patience and care.
BPHS fixes how many bindus each graha's table gives, so the sum is the same for everyone. What differs is how those bindus are spread across the twelve signs, and that spread is your chart's own.
When Saturn, Jupiter or another graha moves through a sign with many bindus, the tradition says its transit tends to give better results. A sign with few bindus asks for care while a graha passes through it.
Yes. The lagna is one of the eight points of reference and it changes about every two hours, so the time decides part of the count. Use the time on your birth record if you have it.
