Throat Chakra
Viśuddha · विशुद्ध · “Especially Pure / Purified”
The centre of authentic expression — truth, communication, and the sacred sound of your voice.
Understanding the Throat Chakra
Vishuddha (Throat Chakra) is the fifth chakra, located at the throat. Its name means 'especially pure' — it is the chakra of purified self-expression, authentic communication, and the sacred sound of truth. The throat chakra governs speech, listening, creative expression, singing, writing, and the courage to speak one's truth. It is intimately connected to authenticity: a blocked throat chakra often indicates that the person has been conditioned to suppress, censor, or modify their authentic self-expression to avoid disapproval. The element is Ether/Space (Akasha) — the medium through which sound travels. Sound IS the primary tool of this chakra: chanting, singing, speaking truth, and deep listening all work directly with Vishuddha. Mercury (communication and intellect) and Jupiter (wisdom and expansion) co-rule this chakra. The throat chakra develops primarily between ages 21-28, when we are finding our authentic voice in the world.
