Durga Puja
दुर्गा पूजा
Durga Puja is the most elaborate celebration in the Hindu calendar, particularly in Bengal, Odisha, and Assam where it is the largest annual festival. The celebration centres on the story of Goddess Durga's victory over the buffalo-demon Mahishasura as narrated in the Devi Mahatmya (also called Durga Saptashati or Chandi Path) — 700 verses from the Markandeya Purana. The major days are Mahalaya (invocation), Saptami (Day 1 of the full ritual), Ashtami (most auspicious, with Sandhi Puja at the Saptami-Ashtami junction), Navami (second-most auspicious), and Vijaya Dashami (the day Durga returned to Kailash, when idols are immersed).

Frequently Asked Questions
What is Durga Puja and why is it celebrated?
Durga Puja celebrates the victory of Goddess Durga over the buffalo-demon Mahishasura, as narrated in the Devi Mahatmya from the Markandeya Purana. The festival symbolises the triumph of good over evil, the power of the feminine divine, and the cosmic restoration of order (Dharma). In Bengal, it is also the homecoming of Durga to her parents' home — a cultural parallel to a daughter's annual visit — making it as much a family reunion as a religious festival.
What is Sandhi Puja?
Sandhi Puja is performed at the exact junction of Saptami and Ashtami tithis — the 48-minute window (24 minutes before and 24 minutes after the tithi change). According to the Devi Mahatmya, it was at this precise moment that Goddess Durga manifested as Chamunda and slew the demons Chanda and Munda. The ritual involves 108 lotus flowers and 108 lamps and is considered the most powerful moment of the entire Durga Puja.
What is the Durga Saptashati?
Durga Saptashati (also Devi Mahatmya or Chandi Path) is a Sanskrit text of 700 verses in 13 chapters from the Markandeya Purana, narrating three battles: Goddess Kali defeating Madhu and Kaitabha; Durga defeating Mahishasura; and Durga (as Ambika, Kali, and Chamunda) defeating Shumbha and Nishumbha. It is the most important text for Durga worship and is recited over the nine days of Navratri, one cluster of chapters per day.
