Hanuman Puja
हनुमान पूजा
Hanuman Puja is performed on Tuesday and Saturday — the two days sacred to Lord Hanuman. It is one of the most widely prescribed remedial rituals in Vedic astrology, particularly for those experiencing Saturn's Sade Sati, Mangal Dosha, or periods of fear and obstacles. The Hanuman Chalisa, composed by Tulsidas in the 16th century in Awadhi, is the principal text recited, alongside the Bajrang Baan for stronger protection.
Puja Samagri (Materials Required)
- ◆Idol or image of Lord Hanuman (standing form, with mace, is most common)
- ◆Sindoor (vermillion) — one of Hanuman's most essential offerings
- ◆Red flowers: red hibiscus, red roses, marigold
- ◆Sesame oil lamp (especially on Saturday) or ghee lamp
- ◆Besan laddoos (chickpea sweet) or any sweet offering
- ◆Banana, coconut, and seasonal fruits
- ◆Orange or red cloth for altar
- ◆Incense sticks (agarbatti)
Step-by-Step Vidhi
- 1
Bathe and wear clean clothes (saffron or orange preferred). Face east or towards the deity image
- 2
Light the sesame oil lamp (on Saturday) or ghee lamp and incense
- 3
Offer sindoor to Hanuman — this is a signature offering. According to the tradition in the Shri Ramcharitmanas, Sita applied sindoor to herself for Lord Rama's long life; Hanuman, in devotion, applied it all over his body. Sindoor on his idol is Seva to Rama
- 4
Offer red flowers, besan laddoos, banana, and coconut
- 5
Recite Hanuman Chalisa (40 verses) — minimum once, ideally 3, 7, or 11 times
- 6
For protection or urgent needs: recite Bajrang Baan or Hanuman Bahuk
- 7
Conclude with Hanuman Aarti and distribute prasad (laddoos)
Main Mantra
Om Hanumate Namah
Chant 108 times during the puja
Frequently Asked Questions
Why is Hanuman puja done on Saturday?
Shani (Saturn) is considered the great tester in Vedic astrology, and Hanuman is one of the few beings Saturn respects — according to the tradition, when Saturn attempted to trouble Hanuman, he was subdued. Performing Hanuman puja on Saturday and reciting the Hanuman Chalisa is a widely prescribed remedy for Saturn's Sade Sati and Shani Dasha difficulties.
How many times should Hanuman Chalisa be read?
For daily practice, once is sufficient. For specific remedial purposes — Sade Sati, obstacles, fear, or difficult periods — 7, 11, or 108 continuous recitations are recommended. A 40-day vrat (vow) of daily Hanuman Chalisa recitation is considered one of the most powerful spiritual practices in the Vaishnava-Shaiva popular tradition.
