Purpose and Spiritual Significance
Navagraha Puja is a sacred ritual honoring the nine celestial bodies or planets (Surya-Sun, Chandra-Moon, Mangal-Mars, Budh-Mercury, Brihaspati-Jupiter, Shukra-Venus, Shani-Saturn, Rahu, and Ketu) which are believed to influence human destiny, health, prosperity, and spiritual evolution according to Hindu astrology. Each Graha (planet) governs specific aspects of life: Surya rules health and vitality, Chandra influences emotions and peace, Mangal energizes courage, Budh grants intelligence, Brihaspati bestows wisdom and wealth, Shukra promotes relationships and pleasure, Shani teaches discipline and karmic lessons, while Rahu and Ketu represent karmic nodes and spiritual transformation. Performing Navagraha Puja aims to balance negative planetary influences, strengthen positive ones, and align personal karma with cosmic order. This ritual is performed when facing astrological difficulties (Doshas), during planetary transitions, before important life events, or for general spiritual well-being. Devotees believe sincere Navagraha Puja removes obstacles created by unfavorable planetary positions, brings harmony to all life areas, ensures smooth progression toward goals, and facilitates spiritual growth aligned with divine will.
Materials Needed and Preparation
Essential materials for Navagraha Puja: images or idols of all nine planets (Navagraha), or a combined Navagraha Yantra (sacred geometric diagram), nine different colored flowers (red for Surya/Mars, white for Moon/Mercury, orange for Jupiter, white for Venus, blue for Saturn, multicolored for Rahu/Ketu), nine gemstones or items representing each planet (ruby for Sun, pearl for Moon, coral for Mars, emerald for Mercury, yellow sapphire for Jupiter, diamond for Venus, blue sapphire for Saturn, hessonite for Rahu, cat's eye for Ketu), water vessel, turmeric powder, vermillion, sandalwood paste, ghee, honey, milk, oil, incense sticks, camphor, oil lamps, bell, rice, lentils, sugar, jaggery, sesame seeds, and a copper plate or wooden plank. Prepare a clean, north or east-facing altar space. Place the Navagraha Yantra or images in the center, with each planet's image or symbol in its corresponding direction. Arrange the nine flowers in rows before each planet representation. Gather nine different colored threads (one color for each planet) and prepare offerings accordingly. Make simple sweets and rice dishes as prasad. Ensure all family members bathe and wear clean clothes before the puja.
Step-by-Step Puja Procedure
Begin by ringing the bell and creating a sacred circle with turmeric-water around the Navagraha altar, moving clockwise three times. Light oil lamps at the four cardinal directions. Bow three times to the nine planets and chant Om Namah Shivaya to invoke divine presence. Sprinkle water mixed with turmeric on the Yantra or images. Apply vermillion and sandalwood paste on each planet representation in order (Surya first, then remaining planets in sequence). Present the colored flowers before each planet: red for Surya, white for Chandra, coral-hued for Mangal, green for Budh, yellow for Brihaspati, white for Shukra, blue for Shani, and mixed colors for Rahu and Ketu. Offer water to each planet representation while reciting their respective mantras. Place the gemstones or symbolic items before each planet. Offer incense and wave it before the entire Navagraha arrangement. Light all the oil lamps around the Yantra, creating a ring of light. Recite the Navagraha Stotra (hymn) or individual planet mantras 11 times each. Offer food items: rice, lentils, and sweets in small portions before each planet. Ring the bell after each offering. Circumambulate the Navagraha altar three times clockwise with folded hands and sincere devotion. Perform complete aarti with ghee lamps, waving them before all nine planets simultaneously while singing planetary hymns.
Mantras, Prayers and Offerings
Universal opening mantra: Om Navagraha Devatanam Namaha (salutations to the nine celestial deities). Individual planet mantras: Surya (Sun): Om Surya Devaya Namah (I bow to the Sun God). Chandra (Moon): Om Chandramase Namah (I bow to the Moon). Mangal (Mars): Om Bhaumaya Namah (I bow to Mars). Budh (Mercury): Om Budhaya Namah (I bow to Mercury). Brihaspati (Jupiter): Om Gurave Namah (I bow to the Teacher/Jupiter). Shukra (Venus): Om Shukraya Namah (I bow to Venus). Shani (Saturn): Om Shanaye Namah (I bow to Saturn). Core Navagraha prayer: Navagrahanam Avatara Devata Darshanam Kuru, Mama Jivane Sukh Shanti Samridhi Ane Sarvotkristi Dehi (show me the nine planets' divine forms, grant me happiness, peace, prosperity and success in all endeavors). Concluding mantra: Om Shanti Shanti Shanti (peace in all three levels of existence).
Post-Puja Prasad, Restrictions and Timing
Distribute blessed rice, lentils, and sweets to all family members and devotees as sacred prasad. Consume this prasad with reverence, believing it carries the blessings of all nine planets. Keep the gemstones or planetary items in your home or wear them (if advised by an astrologer) for ongoing planetary benefit. Maintain vegetarian diet on the day of Navagraha Puja; avoid consuming meat, fish, eggs, or alcohol. Practice truthfulness, purity of thought, and beneficial actions for at least one month following the puja to maximize its effects. Do not allow the oil lamps to extinguish before the aarti concludes. Avoid negative emotions like anger, jealousy, or harmful thoughts immediately after the puja. Perform Navagraha Puja on auspicious days determined by the lunar calendar, ideally on Saturdays (Shani's day) or any Thursday (Jupiter's day). Many devotees perform this puja during planetary transitions or when astrology indicates unfavorable planetary periods. The ritual can be performed monthly on specific days or annually on occasions like birthdays or anniversaries. Consistency in practice yields stronger results than occasional elaborate rituals. Keep the Navagraha Yantra or images in a respectful place in your home for continuous planetary blessings.
