Major Arcana · Card XV
The Devil
The shadow, addiction, and chosen bondage — what we refuse to look at grows in the dark.
The Devil Upright Meaning
The Devil shows Baphomet enthroned above two chained figures — but look closely: the chains are loose. They could remove them at any time. They choose to stay. This is the card's central message: the bondage we experience is largely voluntary. When The Devil appears, you are in some form of comfortable captivity: an addiction, a compulsion, an unhealthy relationship, a materialist trap, a thought pattern that has become a prison. The devil is our shadow — all the parts of ourselves we refuse to acknowledge or integrate, which then rule us from below. The path through this card is not shame but honest acknowledgement of the chain, followed by the realization that the lock is on the inside.
The Devil Reversed
Reversed, The Devil indicates breaking free — releasing an addiction, ending a toxic relationship, or gaining insight into a previously unconscious pattern. It can also indicate the shadow becoming more visible (not comfortable, but necessary).
The Devil in Different Areas of Life
♥ Love & Relationships
An unhealthy attachment, obsession, or power imbalance. What does this relationship bring out in you that you aren't proud of? Healing begins with honesty, not blame.
★ Career & Work
Trapped by golden handcuffs, an addictive environment, or a work dynamic built on fear and manipulation. The question: are the chains as tight as they feel?
✦ Spirituality
Shadow work is the primary spiritual teaching of The Devil. The mystic who refuses to confront the shadow projects it onto others. The ones who wrestle with The Devil's energy honestly — who descend into the underworld and return — are the most powerfully integrated human beings.
The Devil Affirmation
“I see my shadow with clear, compassionate eyes. I choose freedom. The chains were always loose.”
FAQs — The Devil Tarot
What does The Devil tarot card mean?
The Devil represents shadow self, addiction, bondage, temptation, and the aspects of ourselves we refuse to acknowledge. Its key insight: the chained figures can remove their chains at any time — their bondage is partly chosen. When drawn, it signals an area of unhealthy attachment, compulsion, or shadow behaviour that is costing you your freedom. The path through The Devil is honest self-examination — not shame, but clear-eyed acknowledgement and the choice to step out of voluntary captivity.
