The Fool
Pure potential at the start of the journey — the leap of faith into new beginnings.
The Fool Upright Meaning
The Fool (0) stands at the cliff's edge, about to step into the unknown — and therein lies his wisdom. He represents the soul before experience, pure potential before it becomes anything specific. When The Fool appears upright, you are being invited to take a leap of faith, to begin something new without knowing the outcome, and to embrace the spontaneous, childlike energy of pure possibility. The Fool is not reckless — he trusts the universe. He has everything he needs in his small pack (far less than he thinks he needs). His dog (instinct, worldly wisdom) barks a warning, but The Fool steps forward anyway. This is the card of entrepreneurs, artists, new relationships, first days, and the divine madness of following your calling before you have a roadmap.
The Fool Reversed
Reversed, The Fool warns of recklessness without awareness — jumping without looking, or conversely, being so afraid of the leap that you remain stuck. It can indicate naivety being exploited, poor planning, or the need to look before you leap. Sometimes it asks: are you the one being foolish, or are others calling your genuine calling 'foolish'? Context matters enormously.

FAQs — The Fool Tarot
What does The Fool tarot card mean?
The Fool (card 0) represents new beginnings, a leap of faith, innocence, and pure potential. When drawn upright, it invites you to begin something new without needing all the answers — to trust the journey over the destination. It is the most spiritually significant card in the deck: the soul before experience, divine potential before form. It appears when you're at the beginning of a new chapter and being asked to step forward with openness and courage.
Is The Fool a good or bad tarot card?
The Fool is a positive card in most contexts — it signals new beginnings, liberation from old patterns, and the courage to leap into something new. It's only 'concerning' when it appears in a context where recklessness and poor planning are the actual issue. In general, The Fool is the first card of the major arcana for a reason: it represents the most fundamental spiritual truth that every journey begins before you're fully ready.
