Major Arcana · Card XVIII
The Moon
The deep night of the unconscious — illusion, fear, the call to cross unknown waters toward dawn.
The Moon Upright Meaning
The Moon illuminates a landscape of deep uncertainty. A dog and a wolf howl at the moon. A crayfish (the unconscious) emerges from the pool. Two towers frame the path into the unknown darkness. The moon's light is beautiful but deceptive — it shows shapes without certainty. When The Moon appears, you are in a liminal space where things are not what they seem. Fear may be distorting perception. The unconscious is active and projecting. Illusions (of self, of the situation, of others) are present. The Moon asks: what are you afraid to see? What is the unconscious showing you that you are not yet willing to acknowledge consciously? The path forward exists — but you must cross through the uncertain dark before dawn arrives.
The Moon Reversed
Reversed, The Moon indicates that a period of confusion and illusion is lifting — clarity is coming. Or it can indicate repressed fears and unconscious material surfacing in unhealthy ways that need direct attention.
The Moon in Different Areas of Life
♥ Love & Relationships
Things are not clear. Don't make permanent decisions in the middle of this moon-lit uncertainty. What fears are you projecting onto the relationship? What is real vs what are you imagining?
★ Career & Work
Proceed cautiously. Not everything is as it appears. Gather more information before committing. Trust your gut over the visible 'facts'.
✦ Spirituality
The Moon is the card of the psychic, the dreamer, and the shadow-worker. It governs all work with the unconscious: dream interpretation, depth psychology, active imagination. The Moon rewards those willing to descend into the unknown.
The Moon Affirmation
“I walk through uncertainty with trust. I allow what is hidden to surface and be seen.”
FAQs — The Moon Tarot
What does The Moon tarot card mean?
The Moon represents illusion, fear, confusion, and the workings of the unconscious. When drawn, it signals a period of uncertainty where things may not be as they appear — where fears may be distorting perception, or unconscious material is influencing events. It is a call to proceed slowly and carefully, to trust intuition over appearances, and to be willing to look honestly at what is hidden beneath the surface. Dawn (The Sun card) always follows The Moon.
