Major Arcana · Card V
The Hierophant
The spiritual teacher and bridge between heaven and earth — tradition, wisdom, and sacred teaching.
The Hierophant Upright Meaning
The Hierophant (from Greek: 'revealer of sacred things') sits between two pillars with two acolytes before him. He is the institutional voice of the spiritual tradition — the pope, the guru, the teacher who transmits accumulated wisdom from one generation to the next. When he appears, you are being called to study, to seek a teacher, to honour the accumulated wisdom of your tradition, or to work within established structures that serve a larger good. He also represents the sacred rites of passage: marriage, ordination, graduation, initiation. The Hierophant is the teacher who says: 'I cannot give you the experience, but I can point you toward the path.'
The Hierophant Reversed
Reversed, The Hierophant invites you to challenge dogma, break with tradition, or forge your own spiritual path outside established institutions. It can also indicate misuse of spiritual authority, or the danger of blind belief without personal experience.
The Hierophant in Different Areas of Life
♥ Love & Relationships
Commitment, tradition, perhaps marriage or formal partnership. A relationship that has the blessing of family and society. Or: examining whether convention and expectation are serving your love, or constraining it.
★ Career & Work
Working within established structures, institutions, or corporations. Respecting hierarchy and established processes. A mentor or senior colleague holds important guidance. Or: time to get a formal qualification.
✦ Spirituality
The Hierophant is the card of the lineage — the spiritual teacher, the guru, the tradition. When he appears, seek a teacher. Study a tradition. Honour what others have discovered before you rather than reinventing from scratch.
The Hierophant Affirmation
“I honour the wisdom of those who came before me. I learn, I teach, and I pass the light forward.”
