八字 · Four Pillars

Eight characters for one birth

The sexagenary cycle turns a date, a time and a place into four pillars — year, month, day and hour. From those come the Day Master, the balance of wood, fire, earth, metal and water, the Kua number that orders a room, and the Flying Star sitting in each direction this year. Fifteen readings, each naming its own classical source.

Ten readings from the same birth moment

Chinese astrology reads a birth as eight characters — a heavenly stem and an earthly branch for the year, month, day and hour. From those come the Day Master, the five-element balance, the Kua number and the Feng Shui directions that follow it.

How is BaZi different from a kundli?: A kundli maps planets onto twelve houses. BaZi reduces a birth to eight characters — a stem and a branch for the year, month, day and hour — and reads the balance of the five elements between them. Different instrument, same birth moment.
Why does my animal not match the year I was born?: The Chinese year starts at the solar term, not on 1 January. A birthday in January or early February usually belongs to the previous animal year. The readings here use the solar year, which is why the result can surprise you.
Do I need my birth time?: For the full four pillars, yes — the hour pillar is one of the four. The zodiac animal, the ruling element and the annual readings need only the year, which is why they sit in a separate desk with a simple animal picker.
Is the Kua number different for men and women?: Yes, and the reading shows both tables rather than guessing. Read the one that matches your sex at birth — that is the classical Ba Zhai method, not a preference.
