Atmakaraka
आत्मकारक
The planet with the highest degrees in the birth chart — the 'soul significator' that represents your deepest karmic lesson.
Atmakaraka (Atma = soul, Karaka = significator) is the planet that has the highest degree (ignoring the sign) in the birth chart. This planet is considered the significator of the soul — the planetary lord of the soul's journey in this incarnation. The concept comes from Jaimini astrology, one of the two main streams of Vedic astrology. There are 8 possible Atmakarakas: Sun, Moon, Mars, Mercury, Jupiter, Venus, Saturn, and Rahu (some traditions include Ketu). Whichever of these 8 planets occupies the highest degree in your chart is your Atmakaraka. The Atmakaraka represents the soul's deepest desire and its most challenging karmic lesson — the area of life where you will meet the most intense experiences and where your greatest growth and dharma lies. The Atmakaraka's placement in the Navamsa (D9) chart is called the Karakamsa and is one of the most important single points in the Jaimini system.
Examples
- ◆Venus as Atmakaraka often indicates the soul's lessons involve relationships, beauty, and the ego's attachment to pleasure
- ◆Saturn as Atmakaraka typically indicates a soul that must learn discipline, service, and the release of attachment — often through loss or delay
- ◆The Atmakaraka's house in the Navamsa (Karakamsa) shows the primary domain of the soul's mission in this lifetime
