quick answerHigh in the Kashmir Himalayas, a naturally forming ice stalagmite draws hundreds of thousands of pilgrims each summer to a cave that is a shrine for only a few weeks a year.

The secret told in a cave
Tradition holds that the Amarnath cave is the place where Shiva chose to reveal Amar Katha, the secret of immortality, to Parvati — a story old enough that the shrine is described as having been rediscovered rather than founded. A parallel strand of the same tradition credits the sage Bhrigu with finding the cave and its ice formation after an earlier legendary draining of the Kashmir valley by the sage Kashyapa. Both versions agree on the essential shape of the story: this is a place that had to be found, not built, and its sanctity predates any structure at all — there is no temple building here, only the cave itself.
Ice that waxes and wanes like the moon
The object of pilgrimage is a naturally occurring ice stalagmite inside the cave, formed by water seeping through the rock and freezing in the cold air at an altitude of roughly 13,000 feet. Pilgrims and popular accounts of the shrine describe the ice lingam as waxing and waning with the lunar cycle, said to reach its fullest size around the full moon of the pilgrimage season. Because it depends entirely on temperature and moisture, the lingam's size and shape are never identical two years running — an unusual quality among Hindu pilgrimage sites, where nature rather than craftsmanship provides the murti, re-forming itself every year rather than being renewed by hand.
Why the window is so short
The Holy Cave is administered by the Shri Amarnathji Shrine Board (SASB), a statutory body constituted by an act of the Jammu & Kashmir legislature in 2000 and chaired by the Lieutenant Governor of the Union Territory. The Board's own yatra calendar fixes the pilgrimage to the summer months — broadly June through August, within the lunar month of Shravan — because that is the only period the high-altitude route is passable and the cave itself accessible; for the rest of the year both the trail and the shrine are closed by snow. Registration through the Board is compulsory, and the yatra runs in stages with mandatory health checks, because the altitude and terrain make it a genuinely demanding pilgrimage rather than a symbolic one.
A pilgrimage measured in effort
What distinguishes Amarnath from a temple pilgrimage on level ground is that the difficulty of reaching it is part of what the yatra is understood to mean. The trek runs through glacial terrain at altitude, in a compressed season, with weather that can close the route without notice — and the tradition does not treat that hardship as an obstacle to the pilgrimage so much as its substance. Pilgrims who complete the trek to see an ice formation that will have melted again by autumn are, in the plainest reading of the practice, being asked to value the journey and the narrow window as much as the darshan itself.
