What does Guna Milan mean?

Guna Milan — literally "matching of qualities" — is the classical Vedic system for checking compatibility between two birth charts before marriage. It is also called Ashtakoot Milan (ashta = eight, koota = factor) because it scores eight distinct factors drawn from each partner's Moon sign and Nakshatra, then sums them into a single score out of 36.

The eight kootas

Varna (spiritual compatibility and temperament), Vashya (mutual influence and control), Tara (health and general wellbeing), Yoni (physical and sexual compatibility, symbolised by an animal pairing), Graha Maitri (intellectual compatibility between the Moon-sign lords), Gana (temperament — deva, manushya or rakshasa), Bhakoot (emotional and financial harmony, from the Moon-sign distance), and Nadi (genetic compatibility and progeny). Each koota carries its own point weight; the eight together total 36 points.

How the score is read

A combined score of 25 or more out of 36 is traditionally considered auspicious. 18 to 24 is workable, provided the specific weak kootas are understood rather than ignored. Below 18 is not an automatic "do not marry" — it flags which koota (most often Nadi or Bhakoot) needs closer attention, and classical remedies exist for each. The number alone is never the whole story: which kootas are weak matters as much as the total.

Guna Milan is not the same as Manglik matching

Guna Milan and the Manglik (Mangal) dosha check are two separate assessments that are usually run together. Guna Milan scores the eight kootas above. The Manglik check looks at Mars's house placement in each chart independently, because an unmatched Manglik status between partners is treated as a separate risk factor, with its own set of classical remedies, regardless of the Ashtakoot total.

Why birth details, not names

Every koota is derived from the Moon's sign and Nakshatra at the exact moment of birth — not from a name, and not from the Sun sign used in Western astrology. That means the date, time and place of birth for both partners have to be accurate; an approximate birth time can shift the Nakshatra and change the Tara, Gana or Nadi result.
