Badhaka
बाधक
The 'obstructing' planet — the lord of a specific house that creates hidden obstacles for each ascendant, linked to past-life karma.
Badhaka (Sanskrit: that which obstructs, that which troubles) refers to a specific house and its lord that causes persistent, often inexplicable obstacles for a native. The Badhaka house is determined by the Lagna (ascendant) sign's modality: for movable (cardinal) ascendants (Aries, Cancer, Libra, Capricorn), the 11th house is the Badhaka; for fixed ascendants (Taurus, Leo, Scorpio, Aquarius), the 9th house is the Badhaka; for dual (mutable) ascendants (Gemini, Virgo, Sagittarius, Pisces), the 7th house is the Badhaka. The lord of the Badhaka house is called the Badhakesh (Badhaka lord). When the Badhakesh is strong in the chart, it creates seemingly unresolvable problems — particularly chronic health issues, relationship difficulties, and career plateaus that persist despite apparent remedies. The Badhaka concept is associated with karma and unfinished business from past lives. Planets placed in the Badhaka house also acquire Badhaka qualities. Classical remedies include deity worship, charity related to the Badhakesh planet, and mantra practices specific to the planet.
Examples
- ◆Aries ascendant (movable): Aquarius is the 11th house → Saturn (lord of Aquarius) is the Badhakesh, creating hidden obstacles
- ◆Leo ascendant (fixed): Aries is the 9th house → Mars is the Badhakesh, causing obstructions to fortune and father
- ◆Gemini ascendant (dual): Sagittarius is the 7th house → Jupiter is the Badhakesh — obstruction through partnerships

Frequently Asked Questions
What is Badhaka in Vedic astrology?
Badhaka is the 'obstructing' house and planet in Vedic astrology. For movable ascendants (Aries, Cancer, Libra, Capricorn) it is the 11th house lord. For fixed ascendants (Taurus, Leo, Scorpio, Aquarius) it is the 9th house lord. For dual ascendants (Gemini, Virgo, Sagittarius, Pisces) it is the 7th house lord. The Badhakesh (lord) creates persistent, karma-linked obstacles that require specific remedies.
How do I find my Badhaka planet?
Find your Lagna (ascendant sign). If movable (Aries, Cancer, Libra, Capricorn): look at the lord of the 11th house. If fixed (Taurus, Leo, Scorpio, Aquarius): look at the lord of the 9th house. If dual (Gemini, Virgo, Sagittarius, Pisces): look at the lord of the 7th house. That planet is your Badhakesh. A qualified Vedic astrologer can assess whether the Badhakesh is active and causing problems in your specific chart.
