Vargottama
वर्गोत्तम
A planet occupying the same sign in both the natal chart (D1) and the Navamsa chart (D9), greatly strengthening that planet.
Vargottama (varga = divisional chart, uttama = exalted/supreme) refers to a planet that occupies the same zodiac sign in the Rasi (D1, natal) chart AND the Navamsa (D9) chart simultaneously. A Vargottama planet is considered exceptionally strong and stable — it has a 'double' expression of the same sign's qualities, reinforcing its significations without the dilution that occurs when D1 and D9 signs differ. Even a planet in an otherwise challenging position (e.g., in a dusthana like the 6th, 8th, or 12th house) gains potency when Vargottama. A debilitated planet that is Vargottama (debilitated in the same sign in both D1 and D9) does NOT become beneficial — it is powerfully debilitated. A Vargottama planet in its own sign or exaltation sign is considered among the most powerful placements in the entire system. Specifically, a planet is Vargottama when: (a) it occupies the first navamsa (0°00′–3°20′) of a movable (cardinal) sign, (b) the middle navamsa (13°20′–16°40′) of a fixed sign, or (c) the last navamsa (26°40′–30°00′) of a dual (mutable) sign.
Examples
- ◆Sun at 2° Aries (D1 = Aries, D9 = Aries — first navamsa of Aries) = Vargottama Sun in exaltation, exceptionally powerful
- ◆Moon at 15° Taurus (D1 = Taurus, D9 = Taurus — middle navamsa of Taurus) = Vargottama Moon, extremely stable
- ◆Saturn at 28° Capricorn (D1 = Capricorn, D9 = Capricorn — last navamsa of Capricorn) = Vargottama Saturn in own sign
