Yoga
योग (ज्योतिष)
A planetary combination or configuration in the birth chart that produces a specific quality of life experience — positive or negative.
In Vedic astrology, 'Yoga' (not to be confused with the physical practice) refers to specific planetary combinations in the birth chart that create particular effects. There are hundreds of named yogas in classical texts like Brihat Parashara Hora Shastra and Jataka Parijata. The most celebrated are the 'Raja Yogas' (royal combinations indicating power and achievement) and 'Dhana Yogas' (wealth combinations). Yogas are formed by the relationship between house lords — for example, when the 9th house lord (fortune) is conjunct with the 10th house lord (career), this forms a Raj Yoga. Important distinction: having a yoga in the chart does not guarantee its effects unless the relevant Mahadasha (planetary period) activates it.
Examples
- ◆Gaj Kesari Yoga: Jupiter in a Kendra (1st, 4th, 7th, or 10th house) from the Moon — wisdom, fame, prosperity
- ◆Panch Mahapurusha Yoga: A strong planet (Mars, Mercury, Jupiter, Venus, or Saturn) in its own or exaltation sign in a Kendra — greatness in a specific life domain
- ◆Kemdrum Yoga: Moon without any planet in the adjacent signs (2nd and 12th from Moon) — emotional isolation, difficulty

Frequently Asked Questions
What is a Yoga in Vedic astrology?
A Yoga in Vedic (Jyotish) astrology is a specific planetary combination or configuration that produces a particular effect in life. Unlike the physical practice of yoga, astrological yoga refers to relationships between planets and houses in the birth chart. There are hundreds of named yogas — from Raja Yoga (power/success) to Dhana Yoga (wealth) to Kemdrum Yoga (emotional challenges).
How do I know if I have a Raja Yoga in my chart?
A basic Raja Yoga forms when the lord of a Kendra house (1st, 4th, 7th, 10th) and the lord of a Trikona house (1st, 5th, 9th) are conjunct, mutually aspecting, or in each other's signs. The 1st house counts as both, making its lord special. The yoga activates during the Mahadasha of the planets involved — having the yoga in your chart doesn't guarantee its effects until the relevant planetary period arrives.
