Kendra Houses
केन्द्र
The four angular houses (1st, 4th, 7th, 10th) — the pillars of the chart; planets here are powerfully positioned and deliver their results with maximum strength.
Kendra (Sanskrit: 'center' or 'angle') refers to the four angular houses of the Vedic birth chart: the 1st (Lagna — self), 4th (Sukha — home/mother), 7th (Kalatra — partner), and 10th (Karma — career/authority). These are the most structurally important houses in the chart — planets placed here gain maximum Sthana Bala (positional strength), expressing their qualities powerfully and persistently throughout the native's life. Beneficial planets (Jupiter, Venus, Mercury, and the Moon when waxing) in Kendra houses are said to be 'Kendra Adhipati' and form foundational support for the chart. The conjunction of Kendra lords with Trikona lords (5th and 9th) creates Raja Yoga — the most auspicious combinations for success, authority, and fortune. In Pancha Mahapurusha Yogas, the planet must occupy its own sign or exaltation sign in a Kendra to form the yoga. The strength of the Kendra houses forms the structural skeleton of a chart; even with many difficulties elsewhere, a well-stocked Kendra (especially Lagna and 10th) creates a native who finds their footing in life.
Examples
- ◆Jupiter in Cancer (exalted) in the 4th house (Kendra) = Hamsa Yoga (Pancha Mahapurusha) — wisdom, domestic happiness, and profound inner peace
- ◆Lagna lord and 9th lord both in the 1st house (Kendra + Trikona combined) = strong Raja Yoga potential
- ◆Exalted Saturn in Libra in the 10th house (Kendra) = Shasha Yoga — exceptional career discipline and late-life recognition

Frequently Asked Questions
What are Kendra houses in Vedic astrology?
Kendra (angular) houses are the 1st, 4th, 7th, and 10th houses — the most powerful structural positions in the Vedic birth chart. Planets in Kendra houses gain maximum positional strength (Sthana Bala) and powerfully deliver their significations throughout the native's life. The Kendra houses represent Self (1st), Home (4th), Partner (7th), and Career (10th) — the four pillars of worldly life.
Why are Kendra houses important?
Kendra houses are important because they are the structural backbone of the chart. Planets in Kendra are at their most active and visible, forming the foundation for the native's material life. The conjunction of Kendra lords with Trikona lords (5th, 9th) creates Raja Yoga — the chart's most powerful success combinations. Strong Kendra houses indicate a person who will make a substantial mark on the material world.
