Trikona Houses
त्रिकोण
The three auspicious trine houses (1st, 5th, 9th) — associated with dharma, Lakshmi energy, past-life merit, and divine grace; the most spiritually beneficial positions.
Trikona (Sanskrit: 'triangle') refers to the three trine houses of the Vedic birth chart: the 1st (Lagna), 5th (Putra — children/creativity), and 9th (Dharma — fortune/guru). The 1st house is simultaneously a Kendra (angular) house, making the Lagna the most multidimensional house in the chart. Trikona houses are associated with Lakshmi — the goddess of grace, abundance, and auspiciousness — and their lords are natural benefics in the chart regardless of whether the planet is inherently a malefic (even Saturn ruling a Trikona becomes a functional benefic). The 5th house is associated with Purva Punya (past-life merit), intelligence, children, and creative expression. The 9th house is the Bhagya (fortune) house — the most powerful Trikona — associated with the guru, father, dharma, long-distance travel, and divine grace. The combination of Kendra and Trikona lords in any house creates Raja Yoga — the fundamental formula for worldly success in Vedic astrology. Trikona placement in the Navamsa (D9) is particularly auspicious for spiritual development.
Examples
- ◆Jupiter (9th lord for Aries Lagna) in the 5th house (Trikona) = Dharma Karmadhipati Yoga — exceptional fortune and spiritual merit combined
- ◆Sun (5th lord for Aries Lagna) conjunct Moon (4th lord, Kendra) = Kendra-Trikona conjunction = Raja Yoga in the natal chart
- ◆5th lord in the 9th house or 9th lord in the 5th house = Dharma-Bhagya exchange — fortune and merit reinforce each other

Frequently Asked Questions
What are Trikona houses in Vedic astrology?
Trikona (trine) houses are the 1st, 5th, and 9th houses — associated with Lakshmi energy, past-life merit, and divine grace. They are the most spiritually beneficial positions in the chart. The 5th house represents intelligence and Purva Punya (past-life merit); the 9th is the Bhagya (fortune) house, the most powerful Trikona. Lords of Trikona houses are always functional benefics regardless of planet.
What is the difference between Kendra and Trikona?
Kendra houses (1st, 4th, 7th, 10th) are the structural pillars of material life — they represent Self, Home, Partnership, and Career. Trikona houses (1st, 5th, 9th) are the wells of grace and dharma — they represent Self, Merit, and Fortune. The combination of a Kendra lord and a Trikona lord creates Raja Yoga (royal combination) — this is why the 1st house, being both Kendra and Trikona, is the most important house in the chart.
