Parivartana Yoga
परिवर्तन योग
A mutual exchange of signs between two planets — each occupying the sign ruled by the other — creating a powerful bond between the two planets and their houses.
Parivartana Yoga (parivartana = exchange, transformation) occurs when two planets are placed in each other's sign — Planet A is in the sign ruled by Planet B, and Planet B is in the sign ruled by Planet A. This mutual exchange creates a powerful connection between the two planets as if they are conjunct in both houses simultaneously. The Parivartana Yoga effectively merges the energy of the two houses involved. The nature of the yoga depends on which houses are involved: (1) Maha Yoga (great yoga) — when the exchange involves the 1st, 4th, 5th, 7th, 9th, or 10th houses (kendra and trikona houses — the auspicious houses); (2) Dainya Yoga (misery yoga) — when the 6th, 8th, or 12th house (dusthana, the inauspicious houses) is involved; one of the planets in the exchange will be the lord of a dusthana, polluting the other house; (3) Kahala Yoga — when the 3rd house is involved (the third is considered a lower upachaya house). Maha Parivartana (between trikona lords) is one of the most powerful combinations for wealth, status, and life achievement.
Examples
- ◆Sun in Virgo (Mercury's sign) + Mercury in Leo (Sun's sign) = Parivartana between 1st and 2nd house lords (for Leo ascendant) — powerful for wealth and personality
- ◆Jupiter in Capricorn (Saturn's sign) + Saturn in Sagittarius (Jupiter's sign) = Parivartana between 9th and 10th lords — Raj Yoga equivalent
- ◆Mars in Gemini + Mercury in Aries = exchange between Mars and Mercury — combines courage and intelligence

Frequently Asked Questions
What is Parivartana Yoga in astrology?
Parivartana Yoga is a mutual sign exchange between two planets — each placed in the other's sign. It creates a powerful connection equivalent to both planets being conjunct in both houses simultaneously. It is one of the strongest planetary combinations in Vedic astrology, particularly when it involves kendra (angular) and trikona (trine) houses.
Is all Parivartana Yoga beneficial?
No. Parivartana involving a dusthana lord (6th, 8th, or 12th house) creates Dainya Yoga — it brings difficulty to the other house involved in the exchange. For example, if the 8th lord and the 5th lord are in Parivartana, the 5th house of children and creativity is polluted by the 8th house energy of obstacles and transformation. Only the exchange between kendra (1st, 4th, 7th, 10th) and trikona (1st, 5th, 9th) lords creates the most auspicious results.
