Exaltation (Uchcha)
उच्च
A planet in its exaltation sign is at its strongest — producing results with maximum effectiveness and grace.
Exaltation (Uchcha in Sanskrit) is the sign in which a planet expresses its highest potential. In Vedic astrology, each of the seven classical planets has one exaltation sign where its qualities are maximised: Sun in Aries (10°), Moon in Taurus (3°), Mars in Capricorn (28°), Mercury in Virgo (15°), Jupiter in Cancer (5°), Venus in Pisces (27°), Saturn in Libra (20°). The Rahu-Ketu nodes have debated exaltation signs — most commonly given as Taurus/Scorpio. The exact degree of highest exaltation (Deepta or Moolatrikona) within the sign gives the most powerful effect. An exalted planet produces its significations abundantly and with natural ease — an exalted Jupiter in Cancer blesses with wisdom, wealth, and children; an exalted Saturn in Libra produces the most disciplined, justice-oriented, and professionally accomplished individuals. The effects are further modified by the planet's dignity in other divisional charts (especially Navamsa D9), whether it is aspected by benefics or malefics, and the current Mahadasha and transits. A weak exalted planet (due to affliction) gives a fraction of its potential, while a strong exalted planet in Vargottama (same sign in D1 and D9) is exceptionally powerful.
Examples
- ◆Jupiter at 5° Cancer (degree of highest exaltation) = peak Uchcha Jupiter — wisdom, fortune, family blessings at maximum
- ◆Saturn at 20° Libra (exact exaltation degree) = Uchcha Shani in Libra Navamsa = Vargottama — exceptional career discipline and late-life achievement
- ◆Venus at 27° Pisces = exalted Uchcha Shukra — spiritual love, artistic genius, unconditional beauty perception

Frequently Asked Questions
What does exaltation mean in Vedic astrology?
Exaltation (Uchcha) means a planet is in its peak-strength sign, producing its best results with maximum ease. Sun is exalted in Aries, Moon in Taurus, Mars in Capricorn, Mercury in Virgo, Jupiter in Cancer, Venus in Pisces, Saturn in Libra. An exalted planet delivers its significations abundantly — it is like a professional working in ideal conditions.
Is an exalted planet always good?
An exalted planet is strong but not automatically beneficial. Whether it is good depends on: (1) whether it lords beneficial houses in the chart, (2) whether it is aspected by benefics or malefics, (3) current Dasha period. An exalted 6th lord may intensify conflicts; an exalted Lagna lord in Vargottama is deeply beneficial. Context always modifies the result.
