Dasha (Vimshottari)
दशा
The Vedic planetary period system: 9 planets rule sequential life periods (totaling 120 years) based on the Moon's nakshatra at birth.
The Vimshottari Dasha is the most widely used time-period system in Vedic astrology. Based on the nakshatra (lunar mansion) the Moon occupies at birth, it assigns each of 9 planets a major ruling period (Mahadasha) of a fixed number of years: Ketu 7, Venus 20, Sun 6, Moon 10, Mars 7, Rahu 18, Jupiter 16, Saturn 19, Mercury 17 — totalling 120 years. Within each Mahadasha, there are sub-periods (Antardashas) for each planet, providing a two-level timing system. The Mahadasha lord's strength in the natal chart, its house placement, and its relationship to other planets determine the quality of that period. When the Mahadasha planet is strong and well-placed, the period brings growth; when weak or afflicted, challenges arise.
Examples
- ◆Someone born with Moon in Ashwini Nakshatra begins life in Ketu Mahadasha (7 years)
- ◆During Jupiter Mahadasha (16 years), the individual's life themes revolve around education, wisdom, family, and expansion
- ◆Within Saturn Mahadasha, when the Jupiter Antardasha runs, there is often relief from Saturn's discipline with Jupiter's grace

Frequently Asked Questions
What is Vimshottari Dasha?
Vimshottari Dasha is the primary planetary period system in Vedic astrology, covering 120 years across 9 planets. The system activates based on the Moon's nakshatra (lunar mansion) at birth, which determines which planet's Mahadasha (major period) you are born into. Each planet rules its period for a fixed number of years — Venus for 20 years (longest), Ketu for 7 years (shortest).
Which Dasha period is best?
The 'best' Dasha depends entirely on your birth chart. Planets that are well-placed (in their own sign, exaltation, or friendly sign), yogakaraka (ruling both a Kendra and Trikona), or aspected by benefics tend to give positive Dashas. Jupiter Mahadasha is generally considered auspicious for most charts. However, even a challenging planet can give good results if it rules a beneficial house for your Lagna.
