Antardasha
अंतर्दशा
The sub-period within a Mahadasha — the second planetary period layer in the Vimshottari Dasha system.
Antardasha (Antar = inner, Dasha = planetary period) is the sub-period within a Mahadasha in the Vimshottari Dasha system. While the Mahadasha sets the dominant planetary influence for 6–20 years, the Antardasha (often called Bhukti) provides a shorter sub-influence that shifts every few months to a couple of years within the Mahadasha period. A full Mahadasha is divided into 9 Antardashas, each ruled by a different planet. The Antardasha sequence always begins with the same planet as the Mahadasha itself and then follows the Vimshottari order (Sun, Moon, Mars, Rahu, Jupiter, Saturn, Mercury, Ketu, Venus). The Antardasha lord's relationship with the Mahadasha lord — are they friends or enemies? What houses do they rule? — determines whether the sub-period is generally positive or challenging. The most precise timing tool in classical Vedic astrology is the Pratyantardasha (sub-sub-period), a third layer within the Antardasha.
Examples
- ◆Jupiter Mahadasha / Saturn Antardasha: Saturn's themes (discipline, delays, hard work) colour Jupiter's expansive period
- ◆During Venus Mahadasha / Venus Antardasha (the opening period), Venus themes are at their most concentrated
- ◆Rahu Antardasha within a Ketu Mahadasha creates an unusual 'nodes against nodes' period — often marked by confusion and unexpected reversals

Frequently Asked Questions
What is Antardasha in Vedic astrology?
Antardasha (also called Bhukti) is the sub-period within a Mahadasha in the Vimshottari Dasha system. While a Mahadasha lasts 6–20 years and gives the dominant planetary theme, the Antardasha sub-divides this into 9 shorter sub-periods — each lasting from a few months to 3+ years. The Antardasha planet's nature and its relationship to the Mahadasha lord determines the quality of each sub-period. For example, during Jupiter Mahadasha, a Mercury Antardasha would activate Mercury's themes (communication, business, intellect) within Jupiter's broader context of growth and wisdom.
