The rite at a glance

What it is

Navagraha Shanti Puja honours the nine planetary deities (Surya, Chandra, Mangala, Budha, Guru, Shukra, Shani, Rahu and Ketu). Each is invoked in turn with its own offering and mantra, and the rite closes with a havan.

Its blessings and purpose

Navagraha Shanti Puja honours the nine grahas to bring balance and harmony during planetary periods that an astrologer reads as difficult.
It is also done as a general invocation of the nine before a housewarming, wedding or new business, so the new beginning is made under their favour.
Through it the family receives the grace of the nine grahas and the peace that follows.

When it is done

There is no single festival for it. The day is usually chosen from your chart and the panchang.
Families often do it before Griha Pravesh, a wedding or a business launch.

Vidhi in brief

The sankalp is stated with the purpose and the family's details.
Ganesha is invoked first.
The nine grahas are installed in their places, each with its own grain and coloured cloth.
Each graha is invoked with its own mantra and offered flowers, rice and sandalwood.
A havan follows, with ahutis offered for each graha.
Aarti, dakshina to the priest and prasad close the rite.

Suryanar Kovil, administered by the Tamil Nadu HR&CE department, is the only temple in Tamil Nadu with a separate shrine to each of the nine planetary deities — the reason it, rather than a general Vishnu or Shiva temple, is the traditional seat of this specific rite.
