Satyanarayan Katha

• Satyanarayan Katha is offered in gratitude for a blessing received and to begin a new chapter of life under Lord Vishnu's grace.
• Common occasions are a housewarming, a marriage, a new job or a new business.
• The katha teaches that hearing it with faith and sharing the prasad brings Lord Satyanarayan's blessings to the household.

• Purnima is the most common day. Ekadashi and Sankranti are also chosen.
• Thursday is favoured as Vishnu's day, and any day of thanksgiving is accepted.

1. Set up the altar with a clean cloth and place the idol or picture of Satyanarayan
2. Perform Ganesh puja first — invoke Ganesha to remove obstacles before any ritual
3. Perform Kalash (water pot) sthapana and invoke the nine planets (Navagraha)
4. Recite or listen to Satyanarayan Katha — five chapters from Skanda Purana. A pandit can recite, or it can be done by the family
5. Perform aarti at the conclusion: 'Om Jai Jagdish Hare'
6. Distribute prasad to all present. The traditional prasad is sheera (semolina halwa with banana)
7. Perform visarjan (immersion/conclusion prayers) to conclude the puja
