Manikandan of Pandalam
The deity of Sabarimala, Ayyappa, is traditionally described as Hariharaputra — the son born of Shiva and Vishnu in his form as Mohini — and the regional history preserved through the royal family of Pandalam tells of a foundling child named Manikandan, discovered on a riverbank and raised as a prince before the family recognized his divine origin. That same history credits Ayyappa with defending the Sastha shrine at Sabarimala from an attack in an earlier era, which is why the temple has stood on that specific forest hill since. The Pandalam royal family still holds ceremonial rights connected to the deity's ornaments, a link the tradition treats as continuous rather than symbolic.
A vow kept before the journey begins
Pilgrimage to Sabarimala traditionally opens with a 41-day vratham observed at home, not at the temple: strict vegetarianism, celibacy, daily prayer, plain black or blue clothing, and abstention from alcohol, shaving, and worldly indulgence. Only at the end of the vratham does the pilgrim assemble the irumudi kettu, a two-compartment cloth bundle carried on the head for the final climb — one side holding ghee, coconut, and puja items for the deity, the other holding the pilgrim's own provisions. Kerala's tourism department, which documents the pilgrimage in its official material, treats the irumudi as inseparable from a completed vratham: without the forty-one days behind it, the bundle is not considered ready to carry up the hill.
Eighteen steps and a fixed season
The temple is reached by climbing eighteen sacred steps (pathinettu padi), each traditionally said to correspond to a discipline observed during the vratham, and pilgrims who have not completed the full observance are traditionally asked not to climb them in the customary manner. According to Kerala's official tourism account, the main pilgrimage season is the 41-day Mandala Kaalam, beginning on the first day of the Malayalam month of Vrishchikam (roughly mid-November), followed immediately by the Makaravilakku period. The shrine does not stay open year-round the way a city temple does — its closed months are as deliberate a part of its rhythm as Badrinath's winter closure is for the Char Dham.
Where practice varies
Sabarimala's traditions are held with unusual consistency across Kerala, but observance still varies by family and region — the strictness of the 41-day vratham, the exact color and cut of the black or blue clothing worn, and the customs around the irumudi differ between communities and even between individual gurusamis, the senior pilgrims who guide first-timers. What stays constant across those variations is the sequence itself: vow first, ascent second, darshan last — a pilgrimage understood to begin the day the vratham does, not the day the pilgrim reaches the hill.
